Detailed Itinerary
Arrival in Moshi & Briefing
Location: Moshi, Tanzania Altitude: 950m (3,117ft)
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. You will meet your mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing. They will check your gear, discuss the route, and answer any questions you have. Enjoy a good night's sleep and a carbohydrate-rich dinner in preparation for the climb.
Meals: Dinner
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Distance: 8km / 5 miles Trekking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Rainforest Altitude: 2,700m (8,858ft)
After breakfast, we drive to the Marangu Gate (1,860m) to complete registration. The trek begins in the dense rainforest, alive with the sounds of birds and Colobus monkeys. The path is wide and well-graded, making for a gentle ascent. We stop for lunch at the Kisamboni Picnic Site before reaching Mandara Hut. Here, you can take a short side trip to the Maundi Crater for a stunning view of Kibo and Kenya.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Distance: 12km / 7.5 miles Trekking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Heath and Moorland Altitude: 3,720m (12,204ft)
Today, we leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone. The landscape opens up to offer views of giant lobelias and groundsels. We pass Maundi Crater and enjoy a packed lunch halfway. The altitude starts to make a difference here, so it is important to drink plenty of water and walk slowly ("Pole, Pole"). We arrive at Horombo Hut, which offers spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Activity: Extra acclimatization hike Trekking Time: 3-5 hours Habitat: Moorland Altitude: 3,720m (12,204ft) – Hike up to ~4,000m
On this extra acclimatization day, we do not ascend to the next camp. Instead, we take a day hike towards Mawenzi Peak or Zebra Rock. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is crucial for your body to adjust to the lower oxygen levels. You will return to Horombo Hut for lunch and spend the afternoon resting. This extra day significantly boosts your success rate for the summit.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Distance: 10km / 6 miles Trekking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Altitude: 4,703m (15,430ft)
We cross the "Saddle," a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape here is stark and breathtakingly beautiful. The air is thin, and the temperatures drop. We arrive at Kibo Hut by early afternoon. The guide will brief you on the summit attempt, and you will try to get some rest before the midnight wake-up call. An early dinner is served around 5:00 PM.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Summit Attempt! Kibo to Uhuru Peak to Horombo
Distance: 22km / 14 miles (round trip) Trekking Time: 12-16 hours Habitat: Arctic Summit and Moorland Altitude: 5,895m (19,341ft) – Summit
The day begins at midnight. We head up a steep, rocky scree slope towards Hans Meyer Cave and Gilman’s Point (5,681m). By sunrise, we reach the crater rim. From here, we continue around the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, we begin the descent. It takes about 3 hours to get back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and hot soup, followed by a further 3 hours down to Horombo Hut. You will sleep like a baby tonight!
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
(Note: For a standard 6-day tour, the descent to the gate is often done on Day 7. However, some 6-day itineraries push through to Horombo and then further to the gate in one very long day, or the 6th day covers Summit and Kibo, with Day 7 being descent. The detailed breakdown above covers Summit + Horombo. If the 6th day is strictly the final departure day, please let me know to adjust. Below assumes a standard 6-Day trek where Day 6 covers Summit and descent to Horombo, and Day 7 is departure, OR adjust as below for the "Marangu 6-Day" variant that fits the URL structure).
Standard 6-Day Marangu Route Continuation: (Note: Usually 6 Days on Marangu implies Summit + Descent to Horombo (Day 6) and Descent to Gate (Day 7). If your specific "6 Days" implies finishing at the gate on Day 6, the trek is extremely rushed. The content below assumes the Standard 6-Day Trek which actually spans 7 calendar days or fits the Summit on Day 6).
Let's adjust the final day to fit the URL "06 Days" assuming the trek ends at the gate on Day 6:
Revised Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi Distance: 20km / 12 miles Trekking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rainforest Altitude: 1,870m (6,135ft)
After a well-deserved sleep at Horombo Hut, we enjoy a leisurely breakfast. The descent is steady and fast as we pass through the heath and back into the lush rainforest. We reach the Marangu Gate by early afternoon to sign out and receive your summit certificates. A private vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a celebration dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (To accommodate the Acclimatization Day AND finish on Day 6, the itinerary is compressed. This is achievable but tough. Alternatively, the Day 4 "Acclimatization" can be skipped, or the Day 6 summit day followed by an immediate drop to the gate is required. The content provided follows a realistic flow).
