Detailed Itinerary
Arrival in Nairobi & Transfer to Sirimon Gate
Location: Nairobi to Old Moses Camp Altitude: 2,600m (Sirimon Gate) to 3,300m (Old Moses)
You will be picked up from your hotel in Nairobi in the morning and driven north to the Sirimon Park Gate. The drive offers scenic views of the central highlands and Mount Kenya from a distance. After completing park formalities, we begin the trek through the lush rainforest and bamboo zone. The climb is steady but gentle. We arrive at Old Moses Camp (Judmaier) in the late afternoon. The evening offers spectacular sunset views over the Laikipia Plains.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Old Moses Camp to Shipton Camp
Distance: 14km / 8.7 miles Hiking Time: 6-7 hours Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert Altitude: 3,300m to 4,236m
Today is a crucial day for acclimatization. We leave the forest behind and ascend into the moorlands. The trail winds up the Mackinder Valley, passing scenic streams and unique rock formations. As we climb, the vegetation changes to giant Lobelias and Groundsels. The view of the main peaks becomes more impressive as we approach Shipton Camp. We arrive in time for lunch and spend the afternoon resting and hydrating.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Acclimatization Hike (Climb High, Sleep Low)
Location: Shipton Camp Area Habitat: Alpine Desert Altitude: 4,600m (Maximum Hike) to 4,236m (Sleep)
This day is dedicated to helping your body adapt to the high altitude. After breakfast, we take a scenic hike towards Kami Hut or the Hausberg Col (approx. 4,600m-4,700m). We climb high to stimulate the production of red blood cells, then descend back down to Shipton Camp for the night. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy significantly increases your chances of a successful summit attempt the following day.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Shipton Camp to Point Lenana Summit & Return to Old Moses
Distance: 21km / 13 miles Hiking Time: 8-10 hours (up & down) Habitat: Alpine Desert / Scree Altitude: 4,236m to 4,985m (Summit) to 3,300m (Old Moses)
The Summit Day. We wake up at 2:30 AM for tea and biscuits. Under the starlight, we begin the steep, scree-covered ascent to Point Lenana. The going is slow but steady. We aim to reach the summit (4,985m) just before sunrise. Watch the African dawn illuminate the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion—a truly spiritual experience.
After celebrating and taking photos, we descend back to Shipton Camp for a hot breakfast. We then continue down the mountain to Old Moses Camp, retracing our steps through the Mackinder Valley. We arrive at Old Moses in the late afternoon for a well-deserved rest.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Old Moses Camp to Sirimon Gate & Return to Nairobi
Distance: 9km / 5.5 miles Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Rainforest / Bamboo Altitude: 3,300m to 2,600m
Enjoy a final breakfast on the mountain. We descend via the same trail through the rainforest, where the air is rich with oxygen. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife in the bamboo zone. Upon reaching the Sirimon Gate, we bid farewell to our mountain crew and drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
