Day 2

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Distance: 11km / 7 miles Trekking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rainforest Altitude: 2,835m (9,300ft)

After breakfast, we drive to the Machame Gate to complete registration. The trek begins immediately in the dense, misty rainforest. It is a steady climb through a tunnel of trees, alive with birds and Colobus monkeys. The path can be muddy and slippery, but it is lush and green. We arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon for hot tea and a camp dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp

Distance: 5km / 3 miles Trekking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Heath and Moorland Altitude: 3,750m (12,303ft)

Today we leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The trail steepens as we climb out of the forest ridge. The vegetation thins out, revealing the strange, beautiful plants of the high altitude: Giant Heather and Lobelias. We break for lunch near the river and continue up to the Shira Plateau, where we set up camp at Shira Cave Camp. The views here are expansive, looking out over the Shira Volcano and the Kibo cone.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Shira Cave Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Distance: 10km / 6 miles Trekking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Altitude: 3,995m (13,107ft) – Climb High, Sleep Low

This is a crucial acclimatization day. We start by hiking to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch. We reach high altitude but then descend into the Barranco Valley, allowing our bodies to adapt to the oxygen changes. The landscape is rugged and volcanic. In the afternoon, we climb up the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble requiring some scrambling with your hands. It is fun and exhilarating! We spend the night at Barranco Camp nestled below the wall.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Distance: 5km / 3 miles Trekking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Altitude: 4,035m (13,238ft)

Today is a shorter day designed specifically to conserve energy for the summit night. We hike slowly over ridges and valleys, traversing the southern slopes of Kibo. The views are incredible as we see the Northern Ice Fields. We arrive at Karanga Camp for lunch and have the afternoon to rest, hydrate, and prepare our gear for the summit push.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Distance: 24km / 15 miles (Summit Night + Descent) Trekking Time: 12-15 hours Habitat: Arctic Summit and Moorland Altitude: 4,640m (15,223ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft) Summit to 3,100m (10,170ft) The Grand Finale. We wake up at midnight for tea and biscuits. We begin the steep climb to Stella Point (5,739m). This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. We reach the crater rim at Stella Point in time for sunrise. If you have the energy, we continue along the snow-covered crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating and taking photos, we descend for 3 hours back to Barafu Camp for a short rest. From there, we continue the descent down to Mweka Camp (approx. 3-4 hours). You will be tired, but the feeling of accomplishment is indescribable.

The Machame Route is widely considered the most scenic route up Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route” (due to its steeper nature compared to the easier “Coca-Cola” Marangu route), it offers trekkers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and an excellent acclimatization profile.
